Basilica di San Pietro
(Japanese)

The smallest Vatican-city country in the world is in one division of the Rome city. There is the San Pietro Sanctuary in front of the San Pietro Plaza at the entrance of Vatican.

I visited the San Pietro Sanctuary on June 1998, the Sanctuary was covered with the seat under make-up of externals for event in 2000.

284 columns stand in the corridor where the San Pietro Plaza is enclosed. It is seen one as four columns from in to the outside come in succession if we look at from a circular arc center.

The inside in the San Pietro Sanctuary is a big space of solemn atmosphere with a high ceiling. A present building seems to be the one in the Sanctuary in the world-biggest Catholic Church after the 16th century.

Tracks of the light which enter from the windows of a large dome teach us the existence of light and the size of the space.
